The History of CCTV

Looking at the history of CCTV in Australia it has striking similarities to that of traditional television.

How it came about, where it is now, and where it is heading, the path is nearly identical to that of TV as we know it today. When first introduced the exact applications and uses were unknown, CCTV was a new “technology” waiting to be claimed.

With most new technologies of this nature, they are typically introduced to the public sector first for exposure and testing. CCTV started its debut in the public sector of Australia, and this built public support and awareness for CCTV and brought forth new ideas and uses for it.

A few years after its introduction, CCTV systems were making their way into cities little by little, and year after year, the number of cities implementing CCTV systems continued to grow.

Today, CCTV can be found in most Australian cities and public transportation systems. Following the path traditional TV has taken, this leads CCTV to the next step for its future, the private sector.

At this point in time private sector business are starting to implement CCTV systems, much like the public sector this number will continue to grow each year. In addition, it is likely that residents or individual homes will begin to implement their own CCTV systems as the movement expands and prices continue to drop.
